big name devs are self-centered arrogant bastards

title says it all. looky here:

I'm sick of this. Maybe we should add Warren spector and his 'other panelists' to the name Molyneux, in a list of 'famous game designers' who have made millions out of starting a game company, only to try and dupe all their underpaid staff into sticking with a crap wage slave job rather than go do WHAT THEY DID THEMSELVES and start up a young passionate games company.
There must have been a time when these guys wanted innovation and exciting new games. Now they are just tired old men that want nothing more than a big bank balance.
Fuck em.
Time to retire please gentlemen. The next generation is ready.

  • That is a load of bullshit. They seem to be under the assumption that the only reason someone would ever make a game is so they can have their name in bright lights or to be sitting on a small fortune after every release. It just goes to show they really do have no idea and have totally lost the passion for creating good quality games.

I'd personally be happy with a three person office and a fridge full of ice cold cokes. I don't want anyone funding my games and a definitely don't want to sell it to some fat producer for a bit of cash. Online distribution is the way forward. Who needs to have their game sitting on shelf in a store when 90% of people who play it are going to download it anyway.

Ugh, stories like that just make you push that bit harder so you can make an awesome game and shove it in their old, idealess faces.

  • I find it hilarious that none of these "bright lights" designers have actually done anything even remotely interesting in the last half decade. They're just repeating themselves with larger and larger budgets all time, but the tipping point is fast approaching when the industry realises that these old shivs have outstayed their fucking welcome.

  • Perhaps its fear.

Lets be honest, EA are now crapping themselves because the seed of change has already been sown in their own company - they now know that they can't just keep going on treating their staff like a modern day slave (albeit paid). Otherwise the industry will collapse. And if they do collapse who takes over?

The independant developers - that's who.

Its like any large industry that wants all the money to themsleves - try and squeeze out the small people. Next it will be dirty tactics. So we can equate the large studios to the Tesco's/wal-marts of our industry - churning out mass-market derivative tasteless gunk to a market that doesn't really know any better.

And we've been here before. In the old days we used to have arcade machines that were incredibly powerful compared to home computers that could only draw in 16 colours. Nowadays the arcade is replaced with the console... and that was exactly the situation that the likes of Molly-poo rose...

Time to move over dinosaurs... the asteroid is coming!

  • yes peters early games were extremely good. like when he was a small ambitious indie. I dont recall him giving up?

Fable was also quite nice too though.

  • will wright is the only big game dev i still look up to, he understands what the consumer wants and wont let ne1 push him around, EA knows it and they wouldnt do ne thing to compermise his and their relationship. Unfortnatly i dont see them ever steping down, when they die the publishers will hire an exact copy of the prediciessor untill publishing is no longer needed. then indies will be set free, but there will always be some kind of distributor to stand in our way, look at valve, it wont be long till every game is released like that. And not every game is under 100 mb likie cliffski, even if bandwith and internet speeds zoom, 1 million buying a 4 gig fps will be to hard to handle by 1 person

  • I think your seriously misinterpereting what he said.
He's not saying 'Indies suck fuck off', He's saying 'Stop wasting my and publishers time with bad, ripoff, repetitive games you think are good. If you come up with something good, original and worth money, that you've already done, Then somebody take a look'
Project Offset is an example of a good indie game, which has attracted attention from large companies an has hired a Bioware employee.
An example of the type of guys Spector is talking about are the games that are made to feel like an SNES RPG with low-quality sprites and intentional pixellation.
The quotes are always taken way out of context, just like his Rockstar Game speech.

  • Are you people all stupid? This is obviously sarcasm aimed at the established game industry - trying to tell it that it has made it too hard for young guys to innovate new things.

Think a little before you post. You've probably been playin' too many videogames and your braincells are mush.
